What is the LTI (Learning Tool Interoperability) standard?
Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) is a standard developed by IMS Global. It aims to facilitate integration and interoperability between online learning tools and teaching platforms.
In simple terms, LTI allows an online learning tool, such as an LMS (Learning Management System) for example (Moodle, Brightspace, Canvas, Dokeos, or Blackboard, among others), to seamlessly integrate with an existing learning platform or environment. This means that a teacher or learner can access an external tool from the main platform without having to separately log in or manage additional credentials.
When an LTI tool is integrated with a compatible learning platform, the two can communicate with each other. The platform can send information about the logged-in user, the current course, or specific settings to the LTI tool. In return, the tool can send data to the platform, such as assessment results, usage statistics, etc.
This interoperability enables a smoother learning experience and seamless access to tools and educational resources from different platforms. It also facilitates content reuse and simplifies user management, while offering greater flexibility in tool selection for educational institutions.
UbiCast compatible with LTI 1.3
At UbiCast, we have been exploring the benefits of LTI for a few years now, and in fact, our Moodle plugins are based on this standard.
Since the latest updates of Nudgis, we are now compatible with LTI 1.3. This development is significant and brings the following improvements:
- Firstly, enhanced security, as the authentication mechanism now relies on oAuth2 instead of oAuth1.
- Secondly, simplicity, because integrating a Nudgis video platform with an LMS that supports LTI 1.3 now takes only 5 seconds and a few clicks. No need to deploy and configure dedicated plugins.
- Thirdly, functionality, thanks to deep linking, which allows the creation and selection of video content hosted on Nudgis from the LMS, without the need for a plugin.
- Lastly, versatility, with the ability to associate multiple Nudgis platforms with a single LMS. This will prove particularly useful for groups of institutions that want to compartmentalise their video content but collaborate on a single LMS.
